During my trip Down Under in 2002-03, I needed to leave New Zealand after 6 months, as UK citizens are only permitted to stay for 9 months out of any 18, and a maximum of 6 at any one time. It was easy therefore to include a visit to Australia in my plans.

Perhaps it seemed strange to take 6 weeks in the much larger country than many months in New Zealand. I spent the first two weeks with various friends in Sydney, then hired a car and drove quite extensively around the southern half of New South Wales and much of Victoria, even nipping into South Australia, all of which gave me a taster of a diverse and completely unique part of the world.
