The "49th State", Alaska is the second youngest and by far the largest state in the USA. Until 1867, it belonged to Russia, but was purchased by the US for $7.2 million. It wasn't until 1959 that it became a state. With a population of just over 700,000 people, Alaska contains a massive wilderness in a range of different climatic regions rich with geographical and geological diversity, minerals, weather systems, flora and fauna.
