GRYTVIKEN HARBOUR AND CEMETERY

GRYTVIKEN HARBOUR AND CEMETERY

Relics of the former Norwegian whaling station form the main features of South Georgia's capital. In the foreground is the cemetery in which Sir Ernest Shackleton is buried (the grey granite headstone protruding above the tussack grass marks his grave); other white buildings are in current seasonal use by scientists, and in the background with the grey roof is the church, pre-fabricated in Norway and erected in 1913.
