Churchill Barriers, Orkney - 15.4.15

Churchill Barriers, Orkney - 15.4.15

A small chain of islands to the south of the Mainland were linked during the Second World War by the creation of four causeways named the Churchill Barriers, following the sinking of HMS Royal Oak in 1939. Their creation blocked off Scapa Flow from the east and were named after Winston Churchill. Today they make island-hopping considerably quicker and easier.
